"HISTORIC, FIRST-EVER PHOTO OF HUGE WAVE SURFING!" Description
THIS PHOTO WAS SHOT AT MAKAHA, HAWAII, IN 1947 (60 years ago!), AND WAS THE ORIGINAL GREAT GRAND-DADDY OF ALL HUGE-WAVE SURFING PHOTOS. I was born in 1920 (a hell of a long time ago) and grew up in Hawaii, a surfer from age 9, and was living in Pittsburgh in 1948 when I saw this photo in a magazine ad ("BIG THINGS ARE BREAKING AT MAKAHA") for a very exclusive Beverly Hills women's shop. I called the number given on the ad and asked for the source of the photo and was (reluctantly, stuffily, condescendingly) told the number of the source in Honolulu. Turned out to be an agency, but the owner knew my family from "the old days" and gave me the name and phone number in Honolulu of the photographer. When I finally reached him, he agreed to sell me his only print, with his name stamped in red ink on the back, for $25. He said he had shot this incredible photo in 1947, and did not know the name of the surfer. I had it framed and hanging on my living room wall in no time at all, where my Pittsburgh friends who saw it nearly fainted. In 2002, a friend in Vancouver paid me a princely sum for it (yes, there are surfers that far north). Before I shipped it to him, I called the old phone number of the photographer to ask for another print, but his son told me his father had died several years ago, and his records had been lost. So, I had a copy made from my authentic original, and that is the source for this photo. Note: This truly is an historic photo of interest to millions of surfers all over the world, but I plan to have only 1,000 NUMBERED copies made (7.5 x 9.5), with the complete history printed on the back of each and every one PERSONALLY SIGNED BY ME. These will be the only AUTHENTICATED copies in the world, with these few copies quickly becoming valuable collectors' items. Shipped flat and unframed because you will have your own ideas about that.
