"WORLD WAR TWO HISTORY OF DE 320, USS MENGES" Description

One-of-a-kind and unique!!! COMPLETE HISTORY DETAILING THE DUTIES OF DE (Desroyer Escort) 320, USS MENGES, DURING WORLD WAR TWO. 8.5 x 1I paperback, 150 pages. I was her Gunnery Officer from her first voyage in late 1943 to the end of The War in Europe, and collected the mateial for this book from many sources, including the personal wartime histories of all her crewmen and officers still living in 2001. She was in The Battle Of The Atlantic, primarily escorting several convoys of freighters across the Atlantic to the U. K. and deep into the Mediterranean, and was credited with: (1) one-half of the sinking of U-866 in the north Atlantic during operations of a hunter-killer group of destroyers and destroyer escorts; (2) shooting down two German torpedo bombers in the Mediterranean; (3) rescuing 108 survivors of USS LANSDALE, DD426, in the Mediterranean after she was sunk immediately ahead of DE320 by German torpedo bombers; (4) picking up two Luftwaffe airmen after their torpedo bomber was shot down; (5) rescuing several crewmen from torpedoed freighters. On 3 May, 1944, DE 320 was torpedoed in the stern without sinking off Oran in the Mediterranean, temporarily patched up in Oran and towed back to Brooklyn Navy Yard where a new stern was welded onto her undamaged forward section and she was returned to active duty 20 October, 1944. It's all here, detailed, organized. and unique in the sense I have not known of any othee WWII fighting ship with its wartime history in a book.
