"Sepik Mask, New Guinea" Description
Superbly crafted GABLE MASK from Angoram Village in the East Sepik region of North West New Guinea.
A GABLE MASK is hung on the gable at the end of the traditional men's long house and represents ancestor figures and clan totems. Note the quizzical slightly comical effect of multiple eyes and the beauitful rendition of ANGORAM tribal patterning.
Carved figures include flying fox and arms reaching down to spirit ancestor face.
Wood, pigment, wicker. Nicely framed in woven vine fibre.
